Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

Guardian:

… the latest striking picture from that country, Buddha Collapsed out of Shame, centres on a six-year-old Afghan girl searching for an education…

On her journey, she’s waylaid by a gang of boys playing a game in which they’re Taliban fighting Americans. They terrorise Baktay, rip pages from her book, seize her irreligious lipstick, put a paper bag over her head and pretend to bury her alive. It’s one of the most terrifying sequences of recent years. ‘In God’s name, let me go to school,’ she pleads.

words most used to describe people like me

Posted in Personal by isaiahlim on July 27, 2008

Sumiko Tan:

A poll of 1,000 undergraduates in the United States found that most of them viewed singles in a negative light: immature, insecure, self-centred, lonely, ugly and prone to envy were words most used to describe people like me. Married people were seen as honest, caring and kind.

the right to work

Posted in Quotations by isaiahlim on July 26, 2008

The New York Review of Books:

Several times he (E.M. Forster) reminds his listeners of the Bhagavad Gita and in particular the advice Krishna gives Arjina:

But thou hast only the right to work; but none to the fruit thereof; let not then the fruit of thy action be thy motive; nor yet be thou enamoured in inaction.

We don’t beat the reaper by living longer, we beat the reaper by living well and living fully.

Don’t tell people how to live their lives. Just tell them stories. And they will figure out how the stories apply to them.

When you’re screwing up and nobody’s saying anything to you anymore, that means they gave up.

I waited till 39 to get married because I had to wait that long to find someone where her happiness was more important than mine.

why i have no friends

Telegraph:

Spending time with fat people increases the chances of becoming obese as carrying extra weight comes to be seen as normal, scientists have said…

Rising obesity needs to be thought of as a sociological phenomenon not a physiological one. People are influenced by relative comparisons, and norms have changed and are still changing.

everything that makes us suffer

Posted in Quotations by isaiahlim on July 25, 2008

Robert McKee in HBR:

The great irony of existence is that what makes life worth living does not come from the rosy side. We would all rather be lotus-eaters, but life will not allow it. The energy to live comes from the dark side. It comes from everything that makes us suffer. As we struggle against these negative powers, we’re forced to live more deeply, more fully.

reality bites

i was seduced last night by a sean penn film.

into the wild is the real life story of a man who flees the trappings of society to live a solitary life in the alaskan wilderness.

while not the biggest fan of dirt and danger, i found a life without people, noise and materialism most attractive. i was tempted to pack my bags and go.

the rain was heavy this morning and i had the idea to message my boss that i was going to wait for the rain to stop before coming in.

Submit your question for Novelist Haruki Murakami

my favorite question so far is from a Frederic Turner in Cambridge who asked:

Why are your novels so awful?

i couldn’t resist submitting my own:

How would you own funeral be like?

If you had children, how would you raise them?

What types of limitations are good? (in my excitement, i typed why instead.)

10 things you need to know about Haruki Murakami

Posted in haruki murakami by isaiahlim on July 23, 2008

Ten things you need to know about Haruki Murakami:

His protagonists are usually transformed by exquisitely tender physical unions with unusual, beautiful and often confused or mysterious women. He describes love with delicate wonder, and his hero is driven by passionate need once the woman of his life is revealed. “I have to talk to you,” Norwegian Wood’s Toru Watanabe tells the emotionally troubled Naoko. “I have a million things to talk to you about. All I want in this world is you. I want to see you and talk. I want the two of us to begin everything from the beginning.”

the possibility to do well

Posted in Uncategorized by isaiahlim on July 20, 2008

Guardian:

… Kaká ran on to the pitch following Brazil’s 2-0 victory over Germany in the final in Yokohama wearing the ‘I belong to Jesus’ T-shirt he has become synonymous with. But, he says, ‘I don’t pray for victory. It may be tempting to some, but I don’t ever do that. That’s not something we should expect God to get involved in. It would be abusing our relationship with him. I do pray that he gives me the possibility to do well, but then, once I am given the chance, it’s up to me to do it. And, of course, I pray that neither I nor my team-mates, nor my opponents, get injured.’
